Can I use an Apple Time Capsule to sync my iPod over wifi?

Can I setup a Time Capsule (1 TB) and use it to sync my iPod/iPad with my laptop (and transfer other data) over wifi (iOS 5)? Or does the Time Capsule need to be connected to my modem in order to work?
