Will Japanese tree peonies grow in southern California (zone 10)?

I live near Los Angeles and I've heard that herbaceous peonies won't do well in zones 5-10 but that Japanese tree peonies are a bit hardier. Is there a way I could make them grow where I live? And are there any specimens you would recommend?
