What lives in the sand on the shore of the beach?

Im going to the beach soon and i set up an aquarium to hold saltwater specimens and i wanted to know what lives under the sand like at the very shore and maybe a little farther out say 1,2 or 3 feet. And if you can, could you tell me how far down il need to dig or what i have to do to catch them.
